Jest szeroko ceniona za swoje teledyski oraz widowiskowe koncerty. Sprzedano dotychczas ponad 25 mln kopii jej płyt. Jej pseudonim pochodzi od nazwiska amerykańskiej aktorki Frances Farmer.
Piosenki, które śpiewa, to pop, czasem połączony z elementami rocka. Jej twórczość mieści się w tradycji klasycznej piosenki francuskiej, tzw. Variété Française.
Śpiewa charakterystycznie wysokim, zmysłowym głosem, z półszeptami włącznie.
Kompozytorem większości jej piosenek jest Laurent Boutonnat. On też odkrył ją i wylansował, oraz wyreżyserował większość jej teledysków. Przez wiele lat był jej towarzyszem życia.
